Photographing the Campaign Launch for ‘Recycle Your Electricals’ in Luton

I was deilghted to work on a multi agency project recently, capturing a local event encouraging families in Luton to recycle their old and outdated electrical products and cables.

A really fun family event, engaging with younger children and their parents to spread the word about the importance of recycling electrical products, and the news of a £63,000 initiative in Luton that includes 60 locations where items can be deposited.

The project sees Luton Borough Council working in collaboration with Recycle Your Electricals and Material Focus. The launch event in Luton Point shopping mall on 28th September featured the Hypnocat Gameshow hosted by Riki Cycle (played by Luton based story teller Aaron Spendelow), a talk by social influencer Ella Meek who is a Co-founder of Kids Against Plastic, and plenty of activities to involve the younger generation. The Hypnocat character, masks and activities were very popular!

Elsewhere in the mall, a longer term display has been created featuring a manekin wearing a dress made from recycled cables and electrical compenents to capture the imagination of shoppers and provide information about the initiative.

The timing of the event was perfect as we approach International E-Waste Day on 14th October.

A few photos below to give you a flavour of the event. Many more images were sent swiftly to SHOOK, the PR agency behind the campaign.

All I need to do now is to go through my draws, boxes and cupboards and find all those old cables and gadgets! Who’s going to do the same?

About International E-Waste Day

International E-Waste Day is a key moment to raise awareness of electrical waste as the fastest growing source of waste in the world, and in the UK.

Almost all of us have unwanted, broken cables clogging up our drawers, or have considered binning that flimsy cable when it broke. That’s thousands of kilograms of precious copper going to waste, that could be recycled into anything from lifesaving hospital equipment to electric vehicles.

That’s why this International E-Waste Day, @recycleyourelectricals_ is calling on the UK to join the Great Cable Challenge and help recycle 1 million cables!🔌

Join the millions across the UK taking one small action to make a difference. Simply bag them up, ready to recycle this October.

Visit @RecycleYourElectricals for more information, or find your local reuse or recycling point.
